Why Should You Simplify Your Home?
Your home should make you feel comfortable and at ease. For most people, when you have clutter around your home, it raises your anxiety and you never truly rest. You feel like you need to do something instead of enjoying your time at home with your family. That’s why finding ways to simplify your home is a rewarding tasks in the long run since it helps to reduce stress. The joy I felt after decluttering and organizing my home is seriously unmatched! It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
I promise it’s 100% worth the effort to start simplifying so you can actually enjoy your home.
There is freedom in simplifying your home and giving every item a little “home spot.”
10 Tips to Simplify Your Home
1. Take the time to Declutter
The best way to begin the decluttering process is to focus on one area at a time. I like to start with a small space in a high traffic area like a kitchen cabinet. It won’t take hours to do a kitchen cabinet vs the entire kitchen.
Best Decluttering Tips:
- Sort your items into three categories: keep, donate/sell, and trash
- Ask yourself if you truly need and use this item
- Limit sentimental items to a container
2. Buy furniture with storage
We have a smaller, older home that is very limited on storage closets (we have one! haha) so organizing your items in furniture with storage compartments, not only does this save space, but it can also save you money! I like to look for pieces that can serve multiple purposes, like our tv cabinet to store our kid’s toys.
3. Organize electronic cords
I will admit this was my least favorite task because it seems like no matter what you do, they end up in a tangled mess and in random areas of your house. But with a little electronic cord organization (this might be the most adult thing I’ve ever talked about), you can consolidate your cords to one spot, get rid of what no longer works and what you do not need. Trust me, doing this makes it easier to find the right cord when you need it.
4. Use your wall space with shelving and hooks
Adding shelving or hooks to your unused wall space will give you more storage options, and help keep clutter off your floors. You can find some pretty hooks on Amazon and really give your home a luxury look. I love these. They can hold a ton of stuff while keeping your space organized and functional. Seriously, don’t underestimate the power of wall hooks!
6. Create a paper spot
Have you ever felt like paper clutter was taking over your homes? One simple way to simplify paper clutter is to designate a specific spot for all mail and paperwork. I like to use a small basket in our entry way to quickly drop off and “tuck” the paper in the basket so you can’t visibly see it. I like doing this because I know where it’s at but I don’t want anyone that comes into my home to see it. This saves my sanity when I need to pay a bill and I know exactly where the statement is at.
7. Use decorative storage containers to store items out of the way
Similar to what I mentioned like using the small basket for our paper clutter and the tv cabinet for storing toys; decorative storage containers are a great way to maximize storage while keeping your home aesthetically pleasing.
I absolutely love this coffee table by Safavieh Home. I’ve had my eyes on it for a while. It’s gorgeous, practical, and you can store a good amount in it.
8. Let in natural light
I know this is a simple tip but I truly love opening my blinds and curtains every morning. It makes your home feel warm and cozy. No matter what size your room is, letting in natural light will make your room seem larger.
9. Every item has a home base
Taking time to organize your home will reduce your stress levels. One huge tip I did to simplify my home was create an organization system that I could actually stick with. This means I made sure every item has a home base. This keeps the countertops clutter free and makes it easier to find things when I need it.
Now do my children and husband follow this rule? Absolutely not.
10. Start a Cleaning Routine
Having a clean home and a simplified home are not the same but they definitely go hand and hand. I have 2 boys and a husband so I know it seems like as soon as you finish cleaning one mess, another appears. That’s why having a weekly cleaning routine in place is important for keeping a simplified home. Here’s my weekly cleaning schedule I use and love!

At the end of the day, one of the most important thing is for you to create a home that you love and feel good in. When you work on each task and room, think about how that space will take care of you and your family best.
If simplifying your home makes a better home for your family, try to take one small thing each day or week. You will soon realize how freeing it is and you’ll be motivated to simplify every corner of your home.
